The Melbourne ACL Rehabilitation Guide is a criteria driven ACL rehabilitation protocol for both clinicians and people who have undergone a surgical reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).
The Melbourne ACL Rehabilitation Guide is written by two Melbourne-based Sports Physiotherapists, Randall Cooper and Mick Hughes.
Randall consults at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, is a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, has worked with the Australian Winter Olympic Team and Hawthorn Football Club, and has a speciality in ACL injuries and rehabilitation.
Mick consults at the Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre, and has worked with the Collingwood Netball Team, Newcastle Jets, and North Queensland Cowboys Rugby League Team. Mick also has experience and expertise in ACL injury management.
This eBook is referenced a 30+ page guide for both people who have undergone an ACL reconstruction and their treating clinicians. The Melbourne ACL Rehabilitation Guide is broken down into 6 phases, and there’s a list of goals and outcome measures that need to be satisfied at the end of each phase to move onto the next one.
The six phases are:
Pre Op Phase: Injury recovery & readiness for surgery
Phase 1: Recovery from surgery
Phase 2: Strength & neuromuscular control
Phase 3: Running, agility, and landings
Phase 4: Return to sport
Phase 5: Prevention of re-injury As much as able outcome measures that are evidence based have been used, and only tests that can be performed with simple and inexpensive equipment have been included. The Melbourne ACL Rehabilitation Guide provides the framework for a successful ACL rehabilitation process, however this guide is not a prescriptive set of ‘magic’ exercises. Treating clinicians should use a clinical reasoning approach in prescribing an individualised exercise rehabilitation program and management advice for each phase.
